Awarded Military Medal – 17th December 1917
At Glenooree Wood during the period 25/26th Sept 1917. Sgt Arland showed great courage in the organisation of carrying parties under extremely heavy shell fire. Throughout the 26th he did valuable work in getting supplies of ammunition and water to the front line. By his example of coolness and devotion to duty he kept the men together under very trying circumstances. Later he retired from the fight severely wounded.
