‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of the evacuation of the wounded from a whole divisional front during thirteen days’ operations. On several occasions when it was impossible to bring casualties through by the existing route, he personally inspected the new line of evacuation on each occasion and made admirable arrangements for getting them clear and avoiding further casualties.’
