6107, Private Ernest Edward Scott
6th Battalion AIF
Australian War Memorial:
Studio portrait of 6107 Private Ernest Edward Scott, 6th Battalion from South Melbourne, Victoria. A 31 year old labourer prior to enlisting in the AIF on 21 February 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 19th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 28 July 1916 aboard HMAT Themistocles. While serving on the Western Front, he was wounded in action on 27 February 1917 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. He recovered, returned to the front and was wounded again on 30 August 1918. This time after medical treatment in England, he returned to duty in the United Kingdom before returning to Australia on 29 August 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930’s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers’ notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
