Studio portrait of 2382 Private (Pte) Frederick Mathew Greenhalgh, 18th Battalion, of Singleton NSW – formerly of Nottinghamshire, England. A miner prior to enlisting in July 1915, Pte Greenhalgh embarked from Sydney with the 5th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 5 October 1915. After further training in Egypt, Pte Greenhalgh was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion and in August 1916 arrived for service in France. He died of pneumonia at the 2nd General Hospital, Le Havre, France on 19 October 1918, aged 41 years. Pte Greenhalgh’s brother 2428 Edwin Greenhalgh, 3rd Battalion, was killed in action at Armentieres, France, on 3 July 1916. A third Brother 1061 Pte James Greenhalgh, 20th Battalion returned to Australia on 13 February 1917.
